Via The New Yorker: The Allure of Swedish Candy

gummy foamy mushrooms from sockerbit

Click over to The New Yorker to read a great short piece about the wonder of a Swedish candy store and "Socialcandy". From the classic Sockerbit to the new Bon Bon, there are more and more opportunities in NYC to dig into these wonderful scoop-your-own stores. I'm inspired! Thanks to astute reader Roz for sharing!

Gummy Snapshot: Haribo Sour Streamers

Haribo Sour Streamers are so tasty in orange, cherry, apple, and blue raspberry. Not as sour as Sour Patch Kids, a good balance of sweet with sour sugar. Their saturated colors are so pleasing, as well. And they're somehow especially good for sharing.

Ricolino Mint Chocoretas

Every visit to Mexico presents an opportunity to dig into all kinds of new candies. There's one mass-market candy, though, that I grab a bunch of every single time--Ricolino Mint Chocoretas. They consist of mockolate, not chocolate--an automatic no for some. They're quite a bit like Sixlets (also mockolate), in size and sugar shell. Unlike Sixlets, though, I love them. They have a thick sugar shell that presents a substantial crunch--thicker than an m&m shell. The mockolate inside is infused with a strident crisp mint, strong as a Junior Mint all wrapped up in that small mockolate ball. Between the crunchy shell and strong mint, with a little chocolate flavor thrown in, I easily consume these by the handful and bags disappear alarmingly fast. I really wish some stores in NYC sold these--I see other Ricolino candy products but never my Mint Chocoretas!

Detectve Pikachu Movie Tie-In: Snubbull Roaring Raspberry Pink Confection Bar

I didn't amp up the color on those photos. That is the true color of the Roaring Raspberry Pink Confection that constitutes the Snubbull Bar for the Detective Pikachu movie tie-in with 7-Eleven's 7-Select candy bars. I'm into the color for the shock value, and the tiny crunchy purple sugar crystals add something nice to the bite. The flavor of the non-chocolate is hard to put one's finger on--one would be hard-pressed to guess raspberry. Maybe it was the suggestive color, or maybe it was the vaguely waxy texture, but the Snubbull Roaring Raspberry Pink Confection bar most reminded me of those old fashioned Mother's Circus Cookies, or at least their frosting. Which I love. So no complaints. If you don't enjoy artificial flavors, skip these. If the circus cookies pictured below appeal, check out one of these Snubbell bars.

New Chocolove xoxox Caramel Almonds Nougat and Dark Chocolate Bars

It's a little bit strange that the fantastic Chocolove xoxox brand doesn't seem to name its candy bars, only the components. I don't mind--it just doesn't trip off the tongue like "Snickers". No matter. The new Caramel Almonds Nougat Dark Chocolate is so uniquely delicious. The nougat is my favorite part--light-as-air. The layer of crushed almonds and caramel is dense and chewy and sweet, heavy on the almonds. The dark chocolate brings the note of bitter needed to round off the sweet bite. I can't recommend it enough. Yet again, Chocolove xoxox achieves perfection.

Ulker Cikolata: Milk Chocolate with Pistachios

Ulker milk chocolate, hailing from Turkey, constitutes some of my favorite mass-marketed milk chocolate--maybe in a tie with Cadbury. It's a milker chocolate than Hershey's or Nestle. Blend in a handful of soulful pistachios and you couldn't ask for more in a chocolate bar. Pistachios are so underutilized in candy. They're too subtle and mellow to stand up to a strong chocolate flavor, but I love their flavor combination. This bar is a perfect example of how pistachios elevate chocolate as compared to peanuts or almonds. I'm also a proponent of sunflower seeds and chocolate, but that's for a later review. If you can get your hands on an Ulker Cikolata bar, buy two!

Score: 4

Cookie Dough Red Velvet Cupcake Bites

Why are these Cookie Dough Red Velvet Cupcake Bites so compulsively delicious? I couldn't offer a reasonable explanation. The candies consist of tiny vanilla cake bites with the consistency half-way between cake and cake dough surrounded by bright red (super-staining--both on the hands, mouth, and nearby clothing) cocoa flavored "frosting". It's all so artificial and yet each bite begs for the next--each morsel instantly transforms from solid to melty on the tongue. The flavor is buttery and rich and so sweet it made my teeth ache. I finished off the box in no time and have found myself thinking about obtaining more. Thanks, Ben!

Haribo Sour Cubes

Haribo Sour Cubes come in array of unique and new fruity flavors such as Sour Blood Orange, Sour Dragonfruit, Sour Passionfruit, Sour Gooseberry, Sour Plum, and Sour Mango. Most of them are unrecognizable except for the exceptional Sour Blood Orange and Sour Passionfruit. The Sour Plum and Sour Gooseberry are tasty if not identifiable. Although I liked the fruit jelly/ gummy cubes, I can't report that they were all that sour. The dusting of sugar does have a zing, but it's more of a suggestion of sour than a statement of such.
