Gummy Snapshot: Haribo World Mix

Haribo World Mix is a cacophony of the Haribo gummy lines all mixed into one bad. There's nothing new or rare, just the absence of theme, which is somewhat freeing. Different consistencies, types of gummy, and flavor profiles, alligators, twin cherries, flowers, cola / soda bottles, it's all in there. Sometimes I need the guidance of a thematic gummy mix but once in a while it's nice to let it all hang out.

Travel Snapshot: Swikar Caramelos Artesanales, Cartagena, Colombia

Last week obsessivesweets travelled to Oaxaca due to traveling friends' kindness. This week, we may feast upon Swikar caramelos artesanales fresh from Cartagena, Colombia for the same reason! It's obvious from the outset that these small hand-crafted sugar jewels (approximately the size of a pencil eraser) are something special. Amazingly, the robust flavors match the extravagant visuals, with a special shout-out especially to the grapefruit and coconut flavors. Thanks, Alex and Lori!

French Candy that Doubles as Lip Gloss: Tetes Brulees Star Effet Rose a Levres

There's a lot going on in French novelty candy Tetes Brulees (translating to Burnt Heads) Star Rose. First you have small raspberry hard candies with a sour powder core (translating to "acid filling"). Unlike the rest of the candy line, the Star Rose candies are also coated with a rather sparkly pink dye that coats the lips like a shiny lip gloss. It does actually work and I admired my new dual functioning hard candy / makeup discovery. Only hitch, the lips remain so sticky with sugar. The pretty effect lasted about 20 seconds before getting licked off. That said, I know a lot of little kids (and grown-ups) who would enjoy trying these out. Good thing I brought a big bag of them back from France!

Score (sugar and makeup both): 4

M&S Foam Lobsters

These raspberry and banana flavored Foam Lobsters by British retailer Marks & Spencer (M&S) are strangely compelling. Their structured sugar foam consistency instantly breaks down into flavored sugar granules on the tongue, almost like a condensed chunk of cotton candy. They're super sweet and incredibly artificial but they're also fun, not to mention awfully cute. A special lobster shout-out to my friend, Tara!

Travel Snapshot: Chocolate de la Villa Real, Oaxaca, Mexico

It's so exciting when friends go traveling and bring back far-reaching flavors. Thanks to Ben, I have an infusion of one of my favorite flavors in the world, traditional hot cocoa from Oaxaca, Mexico. There's nothing quite like it--simple ground cocoa, cinnamon, vanilla bean, ground almonds ground into a paste and modeled into round tablets. You melt a tablet into warming milk, and then then blend the concoction with a whisk or in a blender to create a vaguely spicy, flavorful and frothing traditional treat. This is an especially good batch from one of the best purveyors in the city, Chocolate de la Villa Real. I can't stop whipping up comforting mugs of the stuff and each sip transports me straight back to the Zocalo. Thanks, Ben!

French Licorice: Haribo Car en Sac

Imagine classic licorice Good n Plenty candies. This time, though, picture the shells more colorful and a little crispier, and the licorice more robust in flavor, all shrunk to a smaller size. You're picturing Haribo Car en Sac, a product from France. I enjoy Good n Plenty but I love Car en Sac and wish more distributors in NYC carried these small bags. As the motto says, "Haribo, c'est beau la vie".

Gummy Snapshot: 7 Select Tropical Fruity Flames Gummi Candy

The motto of Tropical Fruity Flames Gummi Candy is "sweet with a little heat." If you go in for that sort of thing--spice--with your sweets this could be a favorite. I don't mess with that kind of thing--all sweet for me, maybe a little sour. That said, these were at the top end of the candies I've experienced that blend sweet and spicy--a trend that only seems to be building steam. The flavors are sweet and you don't notice that tingling sensation of pepper on the tongue until after the fruit flavor starts to dissipate. That said, my tongue was mildly burning for about a minute after consuming the gummy.

Score (layering sensations): 3+
Score (personal bias against spicy candies): 2

Spring Plum Blossoms: Lotte Koume Chan Plum Hard Candies

(Could a reader let me know what this translates to?)

Japanese candy company Lotte is so good at producing creative and alluring packaging. The wrapper art, featuring the candy's title character Koume-chan, is so beautiful and elegant. The boiled sour plum candies are also exquisite, a perfect blend of sour plum with a hint of sugar. Each deep red jewel comes individually wrapped. Within each bag, also, comes one larger candy, identical to the others in all ways except in size. I'm not quite sure why. I hope to keep these on hand at home as they're a perfect after-dinner sweet.

Score (highest score ever given to a hard candy on obsessivesweets): 4

Novelty Candy Snapshot: Green Apple Ka-Pow KaDunks

No it's doesn't taste good (what would you expect?), but the visuals of KaDunks in Green Apple Ka-Power flavor are unbelievable! I could almost swear that the green ooze glows....

Forto Coffee Shot Energy to Go with Hershey's Chocolate

A match made in heaven! One smooth Forto Coffee shot mixed with classic Hershey's Syrup. It's great cross-branding and a perfectly balanced flavor. The only problem: it's so tasty you might end up over-caffeinated by consuming too many!

New Orange and Mango Hi-Chew Bites

Hi-Chews are classic fruity chewy candies from Japan, somewhat like Starburst. These Hi-Chew bites break down the original size into poppable balls. They're light, easy to chew, and vividly flavored. Both the Mango and Orange are powerful yummy flavors that taste refreshing rather than overwhelming. I'm looking forward to tasting more flavors in the Hi-CHew Bites line!
