Holiday Sweets: Oreo Easter Egg

The idea behind the Oreo Egg is so exciting. Oreo cookie bits suspended throughout a thick vanilla cream and then all encased in an egg-shaped chocolate shell. Unfortunately, the chocolate shell is not milk chocolate but rather chocolate candy. It's difficult to make mockolate appealing and the effect on the overall bite is so very sugary. It's too bad, as this could have been delicious. Recently, Oreo seems to be branching out and cross-branding with all kinds of products. They should try this again with a chocolate company that will produce a high quality milk chocolate shell.

Orange Delight Peeps

This year's packaging

Last year's packaging

Same tasty Orange Peeps

Peeps has rolled out splashy new packaging this Easter, while renewing some favorite flavors of the past as well as innovating new ones as well. Orange Delights Marshmallow Chicks Dipped in Orange Fudge were released on the market last year (see image of last year's packaging) and has been re-released this year. Which is a good thing, because it's one of the better flavors that Peeps produces. Between the marshmallow and the fudge, not to mentioned the flavored specks of orange sugar drizzled on top, it tastes like you're eating a mellow creamsicle. The orange marshmallow alone would taste too bland, but with the more strident flavoring of the fudge and sugar topping, these chicks are pretty tasty. Of all the Peeps Delight flavors, I'd recommend reaching for this one.

Nostalgia Snapshot: Japanese Botan Rice Candy

I was so happy to stumble upon a box of my favorite childhood candy, Botan Rice Candy, originating from Japan. It's nothing fancy or flashy. The appeal is more conceptual than flavor-based. Each piece of the mild rice candy comes in two wrappers. The first is a standard wrapper. The interior wrapper is made of rice and you leave that on the candy during consumption. It dissolves instantly on the tongue and feels like a magic trick. Plus there's the bonus of a sticker. Wonderful!

Project 7 Girl Scouts Thin Mints Sugar-free Gum

Project 7 invents some of the most innovative and whimsical flavors of sugar-free gum on the market (see past Project 7 reviews here). Some flavors work better than others. This new Girl Scouts Thin Mints gum constitutes a nice gum-version of the original cookie. A mellow chocolate gum is coated in a mint shell and they blend really nicely. Personally, chocolate gum is a little off-putting. I like more refreshing flavors. But of the chocolate varieties of gum sampled in the past, this is one of the better ones. Good for Girl Scouts for cross-branding their classic cookies so successfully. (Click here to see all of the variations on Girl Scout Cookies covered on obsessivesweets.)

Ghirardelli Milk Chocolate Bunnies for Your Easter Basket

Ghirardelli milk chocolate counts as one of the most delicious offered by mass-market American chocolate brands. It's so decadently smooth and rich. For Easter, Ghirardelli is releasing two-packs of individually wrapped milk chocolate Easter bunnies. They're super cute, with an endearingly traditional design. It seems like a lot of packaging for basically two bites of chocolate. Perhaps selling the foil-wrapped bunnies individually would make the most sense, but they're a really solid holiday treat, nonetheless--perfect for an Easter basket.

German Chocolate: Schogetten Yoghurt-Stawberry

There is no question that Schogetten milk chocolate is tasty, a super milky mixture that easily melts in one's mouth. It shies away from too much sugar which could obscure the flavor of the chocolate. Despite the satisfying bite of the yogurt, the strawberry cream combines with the milk chocolate in a combination where sugary sweet prevails over any other flavor. Perhaps a dark chocolate would work better here.
