Halloween Candy Corn: Brach's Chocolate Mint Cookie Candy Corn

I can eat vats of traditional candy corn--it's one of those true comfort foods. Though a bit wary of flavor varieties on the classic, I'm open to innovation. With Chocolate Mint Cookie Candy Corn, Brach's gets it half right. The mint is delicious. Why is there not mellow mint candy corn on the market? Why can't Brach's realize that there's something really good going on here? Disappointingly, the chocolate layer of candy corn is totally unappealing. It is barely reminiscent of chocolate, a bit like a tootsie roll went really stale. Overall, I would not recommend these. However, I would highly recommend the invention of mellow mint candy corn.

Halloween Gummy Snapshot: Haribo Ghostly Gummies

In the spirit of the upcoming Halloween holiday, let's celebrate with some Ghostly Gummies from Haribo! And because it's Haribo, we know the gummies will be tasty, too!

Japanese Candy Aisle: Apple Cider Mentos

As part of the Mentos "Drink Series from the World" campaign, Japanese candy aisles are now carrying Apple Cider Mentos. In this case, Apple Cider refers to the alcoholic beverage of apples, not mulled apple juice. Amazingly, the chewy candies do uncannily replicate the taste of the beverage! It really works, too. That little bit of sourness from the cider element gives just the right tart balance. I love these and only wish I could purchase them in America.

Snickers Crisper

Meh. Snickers Crisper has potential. Peanuts and Rice Krispies cohered with caramel? Yes, please! The rice crisps, however, take the place of the classic nougat layer, and without that crucial base, it's a dry mouthful. Too many dry elements, not enough chocolate and caramel and nougat to blend each bite.

Project 7 Delicious Ch-Ch-Churro Sugar Free Gum

I enthusiastically anticipate each new flavor released by Project 7 Gourmet Sugar Free Gum. Some taste better than others, but each new flavor is inventive and fun to taste test (read past reviews here). Ch-Ch-Churro is a big winner in the flavor line, basically mild cinnamon gum with some pizzazz. It does taste unnervingly similar to a genuine baked churro. Astounding! My only complaint: the flavor fades quickly.

Halloween Gummy Snapshot: Haribo Sour Vampire Bats

These Haribo Sour Vampire Bats are not only super fun for Halloween, they also might constitute the tastiest gummy I've encountered. I wouldn't call them sour--the kind that puckers the tongue. I would instead call them tart. And that little bit of acidity blends so well with the sweet. Before I knew it the entire bag was gone.

Bring on Autumn with Cadbury Harvest Mix

Besides Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, there is no more perfect chocolate product on the mass-market than Cadbury Mini Eggs during the Easter candy season. Now we have those same sweet morsels in a new form--more round than egg-shaped and in new Harvest-y Autumn colors. They are still perfection. That delicious ball of milk chocolate wrapped in a crisp candy shell. I love them. Run to stock up while they're on shelves or you might have to wait until Easter!

Project 7 Fairytale Fruit Sugar-Free Gum

I'm already a big fan of Project 7 sugar-free gum. Besides their innovative and realistic flavors, they use Stevia as sweetener, which is rare. There are hits and misses along the Project 7 flavor line (see past reviews here), but the majority are delicious. Add another hit to the line: Fairytale Fruit might constitute my new favorite. The base flavor falls somewhere between Juicyfruit Gum and the old classic, Fruit Stripe. However, here the flavor starts of quite sour and then fades into sweet. It's tasty and surprising and I definitely need to stock up on more of these.

Nostalgia Snapshot: C. Howard's Violet Mints

They're technically called C. Howard's Violet Mints, but everyone I know calls them Choward's Violets. A classic from the 1930's, the violet is an acquired taste. Crumbling the chalky tablet, the aroma and flavor of violet is far more evocative of soap than a tasty snack. But there's something compelling about the flavor, and I always buy a pack when they're available. Not only is your mouth left feeling so clean, there's a delicacy and freshness to the old-fashioned candies that remains really appealing.

Red Vines Twistettes (Original Red)

As previously stated in many a blog post (click here), Red Vines constitute my very favorite licorice and one of my very favorite candies. In fact, they rank number 2 only to Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Red Vines are a life-long passion. And out of loyalty, I refuse to like Twizzlers. Red Vines keeps it simple with just a few perfect varieties. They don't often go for the limited edition flavors or concepts. But now we have Red Vines Twistettes, original Red Vines in small bite-sized chunks. Of course they're delicious, it goes without saying. They're the original flavor. However, unlike a Red Vine which has a hole in the center, these Twistettes are solid and dense. It's not better or worse than the original, just a different density.

Malaco Kick: Soft Licorice Toffee since 1954

Malaco's Kick is a scrumptious blend of Scandinavian licorice and toffee combined in a soft bar. When I see toffee on a label, I assume that the sweet will be extremely sticky and hard to chew. It was because of toffee that I have lost more than one filling. But not with the Kick bar. The consistency is so soft, nice cohered in bar form, but breaking down instantly upon hitting the tongue. It is such a pleasure to consume. I've never had anything like it. I'd love to find the other flavors offered, such as sea salt or lemon varieties. Thanks, Mom!

Gummy Snapshot: Wawel Fresh & Fruity Filled Jellies

Wawel's Fresh and Fruity, hailing from Poland, are absolutely the tastiest fruit jellies I've encountered. It's a nice bonus that they look like technicolor gems.

Summer Edition: Lindt Hello Frozen Yogurt Chocolate Bar

I'm a big fan of the idiosyncratic and innovative flavors that Lindt produces in their Hello chocolate bar series. They continue to roll out whimsical flavors this summer. For instance, this Lindt Hello Frozen Yogurt bar is something new. Milk chocolate squares are filled with a layer of tart yogurt-flavored cream and another layer of a sweeter wildberry cream. It's an interesting flavor combination--fresh, like summer berries and cream. Combined with the milk chocolate, though, each bite is a little too sweet. I'd be curious to see this yogurt cream filling combined with other fruit flavors, as well as dark chocolate. I think this combo is close to something sensational but not quite there yet.

Godiva Limited Edition Birthday Cake Truffles

Every candy company has attempted their own version of the trendy Birthday Cake flavor recently. I'm a little over it after so very many birthday cake flavored candies. Godiva, however, gets it just right with Limited Edition Birthday Cake Truffles. White chocolate covers a creamy vanilla and white chocolate filling. Basically, it's like biting into a chocolate and getting a mouth full of funfetti frosting. It's delicious. It's awfully sweet. It gets birthday cake flavor on point. If you like the birthday cake flavor trend, this Godiva truffle is one of the better offerings. If you're not fond of birthday cake flavor, even with this tasty version you will be disappointed.
