Kif Kef: The Israeli Kit Kat

The Kif-Kef chocolate wafer bar by Strauss-Elite constitutes an Israeli Kit Kat bar knock-off. Not that there's anything wrong with that. It's hard to go wrong with a Kit Kat and Strauss' versions of crisp wafers and melty milk chocolate are tasty. Perhaps the Kif Kaf milk chocolate is a bit sweeter, higher in sugar content. Otherwise, the two are indistinguishable.

Thomas Keller Makes Chocolate

Thomas Keller is a giant of the culinary world and recently he has turned his attention to chocolate. More specifically, Keller is exploring dark chocolate that is created with olive oil rather than cocoa butter. Frankly, I will eagerly try anything that Thomas Keller thinks is tasty. That said, at 8 bars for $120, it may take awhile to save up for this elevated chocolate experience. For more information, see today's New York Times announcement.

Lotte Toppo Rare Cheesecake Cookie Sticks

Externally, these Toppo Rare Cheesecake Cookie Sticks from Korea look like basic pretzel rods. The first bite packs a walloping surprise. The cookie sticks are heavily infused with artificial butter flavor. Inside, a ribbon of a substance resembling cream cheese frosting runs end to end. It's a wallop of flavor, intense richness that isn't unpleasant. It also feels a little unnatural, though--the butter is too blatant and artificial. I think I would have preferred a basic vanilla cookie stick to support the frosting. These cookies were worth a taste, but I wouldn't revisit.

Russell Stover Maple Cream Santa

The flavor of this Russell Stover Dark Chocolate and Maple Cream Santa is quite good, but far to subtle and mellow. We need less Cream and More Maple!! Always More Maple! Russell Stover has a good base here but there's a lot of room for improvement. (Join me in chanting: More Maple! More Maple!....) Thanks for bringing so many maples to my world, Ben!

Stock Up: Limited Edition Peppermint Crunch Junior Mints

This is my fifth year running touting the glories of the annual limited edition Christmas holiday Peppermint Crunch Junior Mints (read past reviews here). I adore them. I love them even more than the traditional Junior Mints and that's an achievement because it's nearly impossible to improve on the original. That tiny bit of sugary crunch adds the ideal element on top of the creamy mint center and bite of dark chocolate. Try them if at all possible during the Christmas holiday season before they disappear again.

Warheads Chewy Cubes Christmas Holiday Edition

Holiday colors? Check.
Festive? Kind of.
It's hard to feel the holiday spirit with Warheads Chewy Cubes. They're just not all that sour and the flavors don't taste like much. This version just gives us less mediocre flavor options than the classic line. I'll wait for the X-treme Holiday Warheads before purchasing again.

Limited Edition Lindt Lindor White Peppermint Truffles

These Lndt Lindor White Peppermint Truffles are some of my favorite seasonal Christmas sweets. White chocolate and peppermint are a beautiful combination. The filling of the truffle melts so easily on the tongue and tiny bits of candy cane give you something to chew on after. It's a fantastic bite.

Special Edition Christmas Dots

Review originally posted December 28, 2009, this time with better photos
(a cavalcade of Christmas Dots!)

I feel so pleased that Tootsie is pulling out all the stops with wonderful holiday-themed Dots! Back at Halloween, they released three alluring limited-edition varieties- bat, ghost, and candy corn- and they were all pretty brilliant and delicious, especially the candy corn flavor. These Christmas Dots maintain the traditional candy's lime and cherry flavors and then a parfait-like layer of vanilla flavor on top. Besides looking super festive, the flavors are great. I meant to eat a few and then share the rest but realized too late I had eaten the whole box! I did manage to deliver a couple to my tasting committee (read: my mom. i'm visiting family over the holidays and she's also a big fan of the traditional Dots) and she also decreed that these Christmas Dots are a mouth-watering success! Keep it going, Tootsie! What will they bring us for Valentine's Day or Easter? I can't wait to find out!

Russell Stover Peppermint Cream Santa

Russell Stover has hit the mark as far as flavor goes with the seasonal Peppermint Cream Santa. Dark chocolate and peppermint blend beautifully together. The consistency of the filling errs more towards gooey marshmallow cream than a peppermint patty. Frankly, I like a little more chew to my peppermint, rather than the feeling of biting down on peppermint cream infused air. If offered one of these treats, I wouldn't say no, but there are better peppermint offerings out there in the candy aisle right now. An extra note: foil wrappers do little to keep these delicate bonbons from getting smushed in transit. And once cracked, these make a big sticky mess. I wish Russell Stover would create sturdier packaging for their cream-filled varieties.

Pierre's Chocolates, New Hope, Pennsylvania

To my delight, I just received this assortment of Pierre's Chocolates at the Signature Solutions holiday party. Pierre's Chocolates of New Hope, Pennsylvania, has crowned the (virtual) pages of obsessivesweets a number of times in the past, to include in the last week. (You can read older posts on Pierre's by clicking here). To summarize, though, this shop makes magic with its chocolate creations. I've never tasted a bad bonbon from Pierre's. They're so beautiful crafted, with both innovative and traditional flavors perfected. Thanks Signature Solutions for this festive mix!

Christmas Edition Almond m&m's

Almond m&m's have been out on the market for awhile now, but I somehow missed them. I wish I had discovered them earlier! They're delectable, more subtle in flavor that peanut m&m's. It makes me think that m&m's with a marzipan center could constitute an even more fantastic flavor variety, but until then I'll enjoy these any (and every!) day. Issued in festive red and green colors for the holidays, these Almond m&m's would make an exceptional addition to any holiday gathering.

Red Bird Dark Chocolate Covered Soft Candy Peppermint Puffs

The elements of the Piedmont Candy Company's Red Bird Dark Chocolate Covered Soft Candy Peppermint Puffs are delicious--rich dark chocolate and an aerated peppermint bonbon that begins to melt with the slightest rise in temperature. The two never exactly blend together, though. Their consistencies are too different. I'd prefer simply the peppermints, as the chocolate just gets in the way of the center stage candy element.

Travel Stop: Pierre's Chocolates, New Hope, Pennsylvania

I've sung the glories of Pierre's Chocolates before (click here), but can never pass up an opportunity to share a few snaps from a on-location visit. There is something so magical about the chocolate-infused air of the shop, so welcoming about the enthusiastic employees, and so truly artful about the genuinely delicious chocolates. If you're in the vicinity of New Hope, it is mandatory to stop in.

Christmas Sweets: Palmer Candy Cane Cups

A reminder to obsessivesweets readers about the surprise hit of the 2015 candy season, Palmer Candy Cane Cups. People don't expect much of Palmer. The company often produces really whimsically shaped creations for the holidays that aren't made of high quality products. Sometimes the products are even mock-chocolate instead of chocolate. But these Candy Cane Cups are the real thing and something special. Dark chocolate shells are filled with a sparkling peppermint cream with chunks of candy cane suspended throughout. They're wonderful. Stock up now as it's the only time of year to find them!

Christmas Comes Early: Hershey's Mint Fudge Bon Bon Bells

Wow, I'm utterly enraptured with these new Hershey's Mint Fudge Bon Bon Bells. Each bite-sized bell is comprised of a milk chocolate shell filled with soft mint-infused chocolate fudge that melts instantly in your mouth. The consistency is wonderful, the closest I've found to homemade fudge in a commercial product, and the strong mint flavor balances well with the chocolate. I didn't have super high expectations with these foil-wrapped sweets, but they're a great surprise. Guest reviewer Mark also gives them a high score, calling them "addictive." I agree.

Via the New York Times: Honoring Japanese Wagashi

Obsessivesweets has covered some incredible varieties of Wagashi, an edible form of Japanese art, in the past (click here to read posts). Today's New York Times delves into this ongoing form of artistry. Well worth a read.

Holiday Sugar: Palmer Peanut Butter Filled Penguin Pals

It's such a shame that Palmer doesn't use real chocolate, but instead "mock"late, for a lot of their holiday line-up. Their molded and filled sweets are some of the most whimsical and visually enticing in the candy aisle, but you really can't do all that much to mask the flavor of "mock"late, or as Palmer calls it, "chocolaty" candy. These peanut butter filled penguins are adorable and I'd love to find a peanut butter filled penguin in my Christmas stocking. Sadly, though, the flavor isn't there and the powdery peanut butter filling doesn't help.

Roxbury Mountain Maple Organic Maple Cream, Hobart, New York

Whenever I'm down, my go-to comfort food is maple cream. As I've written about numerous times before (click here), maple constitutes my favorite flavor and nothing compares to a maple cream comprised of the real home-tapped syrup. As the lid proudly proclaims, Roxbury Mountain Maple Cream of Hobart, New York is Dark and Strong and might even constitute the best maple cream I've ever tasted. It's difficult to be objective as I spoon helpings for myself straight from jar. Thanks, Ben, for feeding my addiction!

Winter Mint Sixlets

As previously recorded on obsessivesweets, because Sixlets are made of chocolate candy rather than real milk chocolate, they're certainly less delicious than m&m's. There's something still quite compelling about consuming a handful of Sixlets, though. Perhaps it's the vaguely fruity flavor of the candy shell or maybe it's just perfect packaging containing the ideal handful of sweet chocolatey pellets. There's something about them I can't resist. Happily, the Mint Sixlets are an improvement on the original. Infused with a solid mint flavor, the pellets have to reply less on the mock-chocolate centers and allow you to focus on the satisfying crunch of the bite.
