Gummy Snapshot: Classic Chuckles Jelly Candy

Chuckles constitute one of my earliest and happiest memory of candy. I still don't like the licorice flavor, but the cherry, lemon, lime, and orange are fantastic. Created by Heides Quality Candy in 1921, these old-fashioned jelly candies seem to be more and more difficult to find. Scoop them up when you can!

Pierre's Chocolates, New Hope, PA

I welcome readers to marvel at the beauty of chocolates from my very favorite chocolate shop, Pierre's Chocolates in New Hope, Pennsylvania. It contains flavors both traditional and exotic, from Vermont Maple to Dessert Rose (milk chocolate, rose water, orange, and orange blossom), from Caramelized Pineapple Brown Sugar to Raspberry Ale. All delicious. All exquisite. Thanks, Mark!

Russell Stover Pineapple Whip Easter Egg

I've taken to calling this new line of Russell Stover Easter Eggs the Underutilized Fruit Line. Good for Russell Stover for trying to incorporate Pineapple, Mango, Key Lime, and Banana into their filled chocolate candies. These fruits have so much potential. Unfortunately, most of these whips are too subtle in flavor. It certainly goes for the pineapple variety. I really like the base flavor of the Pineapple Whip- a fresh pineapple combined cream. Combine this with the dark chocolate, though, and the pineapple is almost entirely lost. It needs more power and a little more of the fruit's tartness.

Religious Easter Chocolates: Palmer Double Crisp

For those looking for more traditional religious Easter chocolates, look to Palmer. Every year they put out a good-looking line of religious sweets for the Easter holiday. My only complaint is that they use "chocolate candy" rather than real chocolate in both the Double Crisp praying hands and the chocolate candy cross. It's tasty, but it doesn't rival the real thing.

Russell Stover Banana Whip Easter Egg

I had such high hopes for the new Russell Stover Banana Whip Egg in Dark Chocolate. Banana is such an underutilized flavor in candy. Probably because it can so easily go wrong and taste gross. But done right it is such a natural blend with dark chocolate. Russell Stover is on the right track with this banana whip cream. It's mellow and has a pretty natural flavor. It's really subtle, though. Not only subtle, almost nonexistent. We need more flavor here. I'm hoping Russell Stover continues to experiment with this combination.

Palmer Pretzel Easter Bunny

The idea of salty pretzels suspended in milk chocolate is perfection. Palmer, however, used chocolate-flavored candy instead of real milk chocolate, so although tasty, it just doesn't come close to its potential. There are also not nearly enough pretzel bits. Cute design and great idea for the Easter basket. I'd just like to see Palmer release some real milk chocolate products in their vast Easter Bunny lines.

Nestle Crunch Snoopy Easter Medallion

I'm the first person to tell you that Nestle is some of my least favorite chocolate on the market. That said, I am in love with these Nestle Crunch Snoopy Easter Disks! The tableau of Snoopy and Woodstock sharing Easter Eggs with clouds in the sky above is so pleasing and unique. What other mass-produced chocolate products depict whimsical landscapes? The milk chocolate with rice krispies even tasted better to me in this format.

Swedish Fish Easter Jelly Beans

Red Swedish Fish constitute my very favorite flavor of gummy or jelly candy so comes as no surprise that Swedish Fish jelly beans are a complete delight. Same great taste as the original captured in jelly bean form. One note: it's a reach to call these jelly beans as they are not really formed in a traditional oval jelly bean shape--they're more like oversized Red Hots. No difference to me but worth noting.

Easter Peeps Limited Edition Raspberry Delight Chicks

According to my taste-testers, if the Lemon Delight and Blueberry Delight flavors of Peeps for Spring were off-putting, these Raspberry Delights were less appealing. I saw saw intrigued and engrossed faces with the Lemon and Blueberry Varieties. The Raspberry, though, were all put down after one bite. The artificial raspberry flavor simply doesn't match with the vanilla of the marshmallow or the creme flavored fudge. Although lovely to look at, these raspberry chicks were a bust.

Easter Holiday Sweets: Russell Stover Maple Cream Egg

Astute obsessivesweets readers are aware that maple is my passion and that objectivity has no place when it comes to that sublime flavor (read past maple rhapsodies here). I was excited to sample Russell Stover's Maple Cream Santa because it's an excuse to eat maple and because Russell Stover produces some terrific and surprising flavors (see full list below). Sadly, the maple cream was a bit of a disappointment. A nice light Cool Whip consistency, the maple flavoring in the cream was plenty sweet but not all that flavorful. The meat of the maple was missing. It could have been so much more.

Easter Peeps Limited Edition Lemon Delight Marshmallow Chicks

Peeps previously issued a limited edition Lemonade flavor that was pretty tasty (read review here). These new Lemon Delight Peeps Dipped in Lemon Fudge, though, easily surpass the Lemonade. There's less of a sour note to these. They're mellow and creamy and the lemon simply compliments the vanilla and fudge base. If you're going to taste-test any of the new limited edition Peeps flavors for Spring, definitely try these Lemon Delights or the Blueberry Delights. They do taste as artificial as they look, but it all works.

Nestle Butterfinger Peanut Butter Cups Easter Egg

Ooh, I had not tasted Nestle Butterfinger Peanut Butter Cups before, even though they are distributed throughout the year. My first encounter was in Easter egg form and these came as a delightful surprise! Somehow, I had not realized that this is a complete mashup of Butterfinger bars and peanut butter. It's a brilliant combination. I can't get enough. These could be my new go-to in the drugstore candy aisle.

Dove Coconut Creme Easter Eggs

Coconut is simply not a personal favorite flavor, so in order to bring a fair critique to Dove's Coconut Creme Easter Eggs I forced a number of family, friends and colleagues to sample the foil-wrapped chocolates. First note, everyone automatically perks up upon seeing Dove chocolate. They know that Dove brand chocolate is seriously tasty stuff, super melty and more creamy than sweet. That said, the nearly unanimous reception of the coconut creme was disappointment. Even rabid coconut fans felt that the creme was too sweet without the substance of coconut. They had hoped for a strong, more natural flavor--perhaps even some finely shredded coconut in the mix. That said, the entire bag disappeared quickly.

Classic Easter Repost: Maltesers MaltEaster Bunny

Maltesers constitute the British equivalent of Whoppers malted milk balls. Though I enjoy both brands and almost anything with malt flavoring, Maltesers are the superior product. The chocolate is milkier and meltier, and the malt has a warmer flavor and a less dense consistency. For Easter, Maltesers created this charming two-bite MaltEaster bunny filled with an incredible, light-as-air malted cream with tiny chunks of crunchy malt ball suspended throughout. I've never experienced a malted cream filling before and it's brilliant. Talk about festive for the Easter Holiday! I wish Maltesers would create a malted cream candy for year-round! Thanks, Evan!

Zitner's Butter Cream Dark Chocolate Easter Egg

Ooh, I found these Zitner's Butter Cream Eggs covered in dark chocolate in the check-out aisle of a New Jersey Walgreens. I didn't expect much from the packaging, but was intrigued that the small company has been in business producing holiday chocolates since 1922. And to my delight, these butter cream Easter eggs are delicious! Frankly, they taste like a Cadbury Creme Egg but better. The dark chocolate is thick and substantial to protect the creamy melty butter frosting inside. The cream itself tastes much like Cadbury creme, except that the sugar is less strident and there are more butter notes throughout. I love these! Best Easter surprise of this year!

Russell Stover Coconut Cream Easter Egg

(Repubished review of Russell Stover Coconut Cream Heart, February 1, 2016. New pics for Coconut Cream in Easter Egg form!)

I really like the consistency of the coconut cream in the new Russell Stover Coconut Cream Heart. It's super aerated and light, with tiny bits of coconut suspended throughout. The flavor, though, is very subtle. You can tell there's coconut involved, but it's more like a vanilla cream with essence of coconut. I would have preferred something a bit more strident, a cream that declares itself as "Coconuts!" The dark chocolate offsets the sweet cream perfectly. Overall, this is a pleasing Valentine Season treat.

Sugarless Easter Gum: Limited Edition Wrigley's Extra Confetti Cake Pop Gum

Wrigley's Extra Sugarfree Gum has issued some pretty surprising and delicious flavors in the past (read some past reviews here). The new Seasonal Edition, Confetti Cake Pop, however, is not a delight. The consistency is much tougher than the others and was tiring to chew. The flavor was not properly rich and buttery, which might have tasted weird in gum form anyway. Frankly, I tasted no semblance to Confetti Cake Pop. In fact, it tasted like a blend of cotton candy and coconut to my confused taste buds. Although I'm excited to see what Extra releases next, Confetti Cake Pop is a bust.
