Easter Candy Season! Russell Stover Birthday Cake Egg

I've sampled a number of these Russell Stover Cake-Based Treats in the past. I didn't love the Red Velvet or Pumpkin Pie variations (you can read about those here) but was pretty excited about the Apple Pie flavor (read about that one here). I'm pleased to report that the Easter themed Birthday Cake Egg is delicious! Rather than the waxy thick centers of the other varieties, the Birthday Cake filling has a dense cake-like texture that melts in your mouth. The buttercream flavor mixes beautifully with the thick milk chocolate exterior. The colorful sprinkles on top make the chocolate lump look festive. These cake eggs are somewhat weird but compelling- rich and intense, but surprisingly good.

Jelly Belly Jelly Bean Jewel Collection

I've written before about a few collections from the Jelly Belly Jewel Collection, a new line of shimmering jewel-like jelly beans. They really do appear gem-like which makes them feel extra special, like treasures. In the past I tried the Draft Beer Beans, the fantastic Star Wars Mix, and the illustrious Frozen Mix. The allure is mostly in the aesthetics of the bean. I mean, there are delicious flavors, too, but what makes these stand out is their unique look. Recently I was lucky enough to be sent samples from Jelly Belly and had the chance to try more shimmering beans from the jewel line. The stand-out, by far, are the Jewel Ginger Ale beans. They're a champagne hue imbued with golden shimmer so it feels like you're scooping edible golden nuggets into your mouth. The taste is a nice mix of vanilla, spicy ginger, and effervescence. I have no idea what magic creates the "taste" of fizz. The ginger is lovely. The Grape Jewel beans, rich purple with a silver sheen, taste super grapey and juicy. Finally the Jewel Mix has a mix of fresh fruits that blend really nicely. Except the blue raspberry bean, an artificial flavor I just don't like. But the blueberry beans more than make up for it. I can't wait to see which new flavors and sparkling colors they come out with next!

* Special note: I received these samples from Jelly Belly Candy Company, the makers of Jelly Belly Jelly Beans. Thanks, Jelly Belly! I love to sample your exciting flavors! Although I review the jelly beans above, I do not give numbered scores to free samples so as to avoid any possibility of unfair scoring.

Thanks, KFC! Chocolate lined biscuit edible coffee cups!

photo courtesy of kfc via the new york times

The blog title says it all. I've always been a Kentucky Fried Chicken advocate and now the chain is turning the fast-food coffee industry on its head! Today's New York Times reports that KFC is releasing chocolate lined biscuit coffee cups in England as a test market. I'm utterly fascinated to hear the results. It's eco-friendly and could be delicious. That said, one quote in the article worries me. The designer of the edible cups states: "The cups have been dosed with ambient aromas, including 'Coconut Sun Cream,' 'Freshly Cut Grass' and 'Wild Flowers.'" Oh? Well, I hope we'll get to see for ourselves.

How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop? This is the age-old question and now there is an answer!! Approximately 1000! Researchers at NYU's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Florida State University undertook the mission for what we might deem as more practical reasons related to chemical and geological applications, but we now know the answer nonetheless!

Feh: The Cronut Necklace

Feh. I'm all for celebrating sweets, but Dominique Ansel has gone too far. Talk about taking the fun out of baked goods and making them far too precious. This is like the cupcake crazy taken up a notch. I protest! To read more on the Cronut Necklace on Gothamist click here

Vosges Tarte Caramels

In reality I love almost any caramel in any form, so I'm not too impartial in a caramel review. That said, these Vosges Tarte Caramels are exceptionally good. A thin layer of crisp vaguely bitter 62% cacao envelops a firm two-bite sized caramel infused with hibiscus, blood orange and bitter orange liquor. A colorful sprinkling of hibiscus dusts the top of each sweet. Frankly, my palate recognizes the extra flavors as a subtly fruity citrus essence. Thanks, Sally!

Limited Edition Sanrio Helly Kitty Pez Collection: A Pre-Valentine for Obsessivesweets

I generally stay away from Pez and all the wonderful accouterments because I know my own nature- soon obsessivesweets would be buried in a pile of Pez dispensers of her own making, murmuring "My Precious" from beneath the mountain of plastic. I love these things- candy and cuteness and collectibility- all so enticing!! But now I own four of the best Pez dispensers ever- in their very own carrying case! And I don't even have to feel guilty because they were a gift from the Valentine of Obsessivesweets! There's not much to say about them except that they are perfection- Hello Kitty greatness filled with sweet sugar tablets. Happy Valentine's Day to Me!
