Whispers of Christmas Treats to Come: Gingerbread Flavored m&m's and Twix!

Add these goodies to the wish list pronto! Oh my, it does seem early to think about Christmas holiday candy before Halloween has even passed, but word has it over on theimpulsivebuy.com that there have already been sightings of new Gingerbread m&m's and Gingerbread Twix at Walmarts! I looooove gingerbread and feel that it could be a brilliant new taste combination with traditional chocolate and caramel candies. I cannot wait to try these! Any readers who have, please write in with reports!

Halloween Candy Corn / Pumpkin Spice - Pie Madness, Part 3: Russell Stover Milk Chocolate Pumpkin Pie

This Russell Stover Milk Chocolate Pumpkin Pie Pumpkin was an odd addition to this year's array of pumpkin-y spiced delights. The filling was another really quirky variety of pumpkin pie, something completely unattributable flavor-wise- fruity nutmeg?- but not bad tasting, either. What kept me thinking about this three-bite too-sweet treat was the consistency of the filling. The pumpkin pie center melted broke apart in smooth sheets of sugar, plates of crystals separated and dissolved on the tongue. I think it's the consistency that Peppermint Patties wish they could have. I never would have finished the holiday treat if it weren't for that consistency; because of it, I finished the first and promptly consumed a second.

Score (a vaguely bewildered): 3

Halloween Candy Corn / Pumpkin Spice - Pie Madness, Part 2: Pumpkin Spice m&m's

In-keeping with the 2013 candy line-up, m&m's came out with two limited edition flavors this season: Pumpkin Spice and Candy Corn. I was surprised how wonderful the new limited edition Candy Corn m&m's. The much-anticipated Pumpkin Spice m&m's, however, were somewhat disappointing. Like the Pumpkin Spice Candy Corn by Brach's, I don't taste Pumpkin. There's certainly a lot of Cinnamon and then a vaguely fruity undertone that I couldn't name, but I don't taste pumpkin. (Thanks for finding these, Kara!)

Halloween Candy Corn / Pumpkin Spice - Pie Madness, Part 1: Brach's Pumpkin Spice Candy Corn

Ok, let's discuss the obvious. Candy Corn and Pumpkin have always been big favorites in the Halloween market. This year, though, they're definitely amped up. They're everywhere. Some of the experiments are wonderful successes. Some are duds. Let's just round up past contenders, discuss the current set, and move along. It's overload at this point.

Brach's Pumpkin Spice Candy Corn sum up the two trends in one fantastic package! Brach's know's candy corn better than any other company. I would never have identified this new flavor as Pumpkin Spice. Never. There's some cinnamon nutmeg something going on but if forced to guess I would have hazarded: gingerbread. So who knows what this flavor is. That said, I loved it. I would better classify the flavor as Extra Strength Candy Corn. It's just super extra sweet. Try them. But don't picture pumpkin pie dancing across your taste-buds...

A Maple Cream Frenzy: An Ode; An Obsession

Past blog posts have extolled the merits of maple as nature's finest flavor. It's no secret that I lose my mind over maple anything. The reason that there are so few posts about maple products on obsessivesweets is that I can rarely get any of them in front of a camera before they are consumed. Really, I can't keep the stuff around the house- it's my crack. So I offer here a brief roundup of the incredible maple delights I've consumed of late. There's no sense in reviewing them. They're all fives. I can't cast a critical eye on anything maple. It's all too good.

This array of maple products drove me wild. (From PiecesofVermont.com. Thanks, Ben!)

Pinnacle Chocolate's Maple Milk Chocolate Bar is an intense chocolate bar. I tend to think of maple as a hearty full flavor, never as a secondary supporting one. But it works in this chocolate bar. This is a very light milk chocolate infused with maple sugar infused through the bar. The almost bitter chocolate hits your tastebuds first, followed up by warmer maple notes. I loved it, and it's totally unique to anything I've tasted.

Spooky Halloween Sweets: Cadbury Crunchy Spiders, Milk Chocolate with Green Crisped Rice Balls

Hooray! Cadbury can't really go wrong when it comes to Halloween candy! It all simply tastes so good. These Crunchy Spiders are beauties. A three-bite milk chocolate treat with crunchy little crisped rice balls suspended inside in the form of a spider's body. I'm especially into the fact that there are hairs scored into the chocolate. Spoooooky! (Ok, cute). The only thing I would criticize is the fact that the rice crisps are a vaguely puce-tinged green or yellow. They're tiny so the color doesn't really stand out from the brown chocolate. maybe they're supposed to look like little green pustules? As you can see from the photo, it's a half-hearted effort at green coloring- maybe if it had been a more fervent shade of green it would have been an enjoyable element of the candy? Cadbury didn't need to venture into food coloring- the spider is perfect without. I bought these in England recently and so wish I could find them in NYC, too.

Lindt Berry Affair Candy Bar: White Chocolate Bar with a Cherry and Blackberry Yogurt Filling

Lindt has released a new line of candy bars with whimsical packaging and esoteric flavors. It's called the "Hello Summer" line but I'm just discovering them now. The first one I picked up was the Berry Affair candy bar consisting of white chocolate with a cherry and blackberry yogurt filling. I really like Lindt's white chocolate- totally melty without that yucky waxy consistency. The cherry and blackberry yogurt filling is great! A tiny bit of tart mixed with a really nice berry flavor and just enough crunch of blackberry seeds to give the bar more substance. Unfortunately, the combo of white chocolate and yogurt filling is too sweet overall. Perhaps a dark chocolate exterior would have balanced the sweet filling a little better? I think that Lindt is really onto something good with this bar- it just needs to be tweaked a little. I'm excited to taste test more from this new line.

Halloween Sweets: Jelly Belly & Disney Create Vile Villains Series, Evil Apple Mix

About a week back, I introduced the Treasure Chest/ Captain Hook Mix in the Jelly Belly and Disney Collaboration, the Vile Villains series of jelly bean mixes. Now I've taste-tested two of these limited edition mixes created for Halloween, and the latest is fantastic. I loved the Evil Queen / Evil Apple Mix, consisting of three flavors of Jelly Belly Apple flavors- Green Apple, Sour Apple, and Red Apple. None of them are a surprise, and all are delicious and compliment one another. I ate this handful of jelly beans in about 30 seconds flat. I only wish I could remember where I purchased them so I could go get more. Delicious!

Halloween Candy Corn / Pumpkin Spice - Pie Madness: Candy Corn Soap

This year, Halloween treats appear to be playing with the candy corn or pumpkin spice concepts most of all. In this vein I present my new Candy Corn Soap, purchased at a local Northern California fair by my Mom. Basically, the soap smells like Butterscotch mixed with extra Vanilla. It's not exactly Candy Corn in aroma, but close enough once the tri-colored visuals are in place. Has anyone else experienced the flavor/aroma/design of candy corn in unlikely forms lately?

Halloween candy season officially began a few weeks back as stores were inundated with all kinds of classic and newly innovated holiday treats. Peeps marshmallow ghosts constitute the classic. Halloween Candy: Jelly Belly Limited Edition Disney's Evil Villains Series Jelly Beans Treasure Chest / Captain Hook Mix

In conjunction with Disney, Jelly Belly has released a series of Vile Villains jellybean mixes for Halloween. Talk about scary! Captain Hook from Peter Pan, Ursula of The Little Mermaid, Cruella de Vil of 101 Dalmations, and the Evil Queen of Sleeping Beauty all host their own spooky Halloween flavor combinations. These are fun!

* The Captain Hook / Treasure Chest Mix includes: berry blue, berry smoothie, orange sherbet, tutti-fruitti, and very cherry
* The Cruella Mix includes: coconut, very cherry, and wild blackberry
* The Ursula / Lost Souls Mix includes: berry blue, berry smoothie, blueberry, island punch and sour grape
* The Evil Queen / Evil Apple Mix includes: green apple, red apple, and sour apple
(Flavor list from drugstorenews.com)

I first tried the Captain Hook Tresure Chest Mix. I just don't like the Berry Blue flavor- so artificial. This is a subjective preference as I know a lot of people who love "blue" flavored candy. Once I had eradicated the offending flavor, I loved the overall combination- each one individually delicious and even more fun combined.

Vosges Haut-Chocolate Hunger Games Collection

Vosges brings us one of the most promising movie tie-ins of all time- The Hunger Games Catching Fire Chocolate Collection. It appears to be a really innovative collection of chocolate flavors and I'm so excited to try so many of them. I'll shamefully admit, as well, to having devoured the series of Hunger Games books. Truth be told, to have a luxurious food product promote a film that centers on starving gladiator children feels a little unwieldy. (That's an understatement. Isn't this pairing troubling?) Nonetheless, it's worth taking a look at the lineup: a special book filled with 12 different candy bars flavored to represent each of the districts of Panem; or individual chocolate bars such as the District 10 Beef Jerky and Smoked Mesquite Milk Chocolate Bar or the President Snow Bar, comprised of telicherry peppercorns caramel and blood orange in dark chocolate.
