Russell Stover Caramel Apple

I sure like the size of this Russell Stover Big Bite Caramel Apple! It clocks in at about 1/3 larger than a full-size Peppermint Patty. And I love a mouth full of caramel. Russell Stover caramel is really good, buttery, and thick. Unfortunately, the green apple flavor infused through the caramel tastes so artificial, like the Jolly Rancher apple flavor, and it detracts from the hearty goodness of each caramel-filled gooey bite. Forget the seasonal infusion on this one, Russell Stover, and stick with the delicious classic!

Candy as Fashion: 50,000 Gummy Bear Gown (Incredible)

I'm a sucker for candy fashion. This gown made of 50,000 gummy bears is no exception. Simply the amount of work to create such an intricate piece of art is incredible. The designers, Hissa Igarashi and Sayuri Marakumi, created the form of the dress from steel wire and then hand-glued all 50,000 gummy bears in a careful pattern of color. The final result? 220 pounds of fashion!

Fresh Coffee Caramels at Saul Restaurant, Brooklyn

These fresh-made coffee caramels were some of the finest I've ever consumed. They were served post-meal at Saul Restaurant in the Brooklyn Museum. Perhaps not the reason to dine at Saul, these caramels certainly provide an added incentive. Soft, gooey, buttery, rich- the ideal consistency and flavor. (Swoon).

Breaking News:, The Lollipop That Plays Music in Your Mouth

Word in the candy gossip channels has it on good word that there's a new type of candy coming down the line, a technologically savvy candy. The is a lollipop that plays music in one's mouth. The Kickstarter project will begin soon and I'm totally intrigued to test out the final product. Click here to learn more and receive updates as the project heats up.

Candy as Art: Emily Blincoe's Colorful Candies

images courtesy of Emily Blincoe

Artist Emily Blincoe has embarked on a photography project called Colors Organized Neatly, and a number of her images focus on candies organized by color. Three examples are included in this blog post but if you'd like to delve further into these oddly comforting compositions, head over to Blincoe's full flickr set or the blog post published on Colossal. Maybe it's because I work in museum collections, but I love the way she has divided, shaped, and organized these sugar-filled tableaus. Thanks to Eliza for introducing me to the series!

Pumpkin Spice - Pie Madness Part 5: Enough!!

Over the past month I have cried out against the all-pervasive "Pumpkin Spice" and "Pumpkin Pie" trend inundating the world of candy delights (Click to read Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4). I am pleased to say that I am not the only online outlet decrying the popularity of the difficult-to-(pleasantly)-recreate flavor. Jezebel blog has previously presented two articles outlining the problematic trend and asking the artificial pumpkin flavoring to please disappear pronto (click here and here to read). Now, the bastion of breaking news, The New York Times, has jumped on the bandwagon with a video uncovering what exactly makes up "Pumpkin Spice" flavoring (hint: not pumpkin nor nutmeg nor cinnamon nor clove nor any related spice):
NYTimes Video, Mysterious "Pumpkin" Flavoring....
Join the movement!! Down with artificial pumpkin spice!

Christmas Treats: Russell Stover Peppermint Bark Snowman

For an inexpensive three-bite Christmas-y treat, try a Russell Stover Peppermint Bark Snowman. It's got that nice mix of dark and white chocolate with a feisty mint pervasive throughout. I wish there was more crunch in there, more peppermint bits to cohere the whole thing. But I'd eat more of these snowmen with pleasure.

Delish Dark & Twisted Dark Chocolate with Lemon & Black Pepper

Wow! I didn't have high hopes for the Walgreens line of Delish candies and chocolates. I figured that the fact that the line is so inexpensive would mean waxy cheap chocolate. I was surprised, however, with the nice Belgian chocolate employed- no Jacques Torres but pretty tasty. And I'm super impressed with some of these unique and experimental chocolate bar flavors- these are not your average "drugstore fare"! The Delish Dark & Twisted Lemon & Black Pepper Dark Chocolate bar is not my favorite combination. Lemon oil is infused throughout the chocolate, endowing an acidic citrus zing to each bite. In addition, little crunchy bits of pepper break through as the chocolate melts. I'm not big on pepper on any food so I cannot adequately judge the flavor balance here. To my mind, the less pepper the better in any situation. So overall I didn't love it. But I did love getting to have a new chocolate flavored adventure for very little money. I look forward to trying this entire line of chocolate bars, especially the Dark & Sinful Pear & Almond Dark Chocolate bar...mmmm....

Christmas Holiday Peeps Preview: Sugar Cookie Peeps Dipped in Milk Chocolate

Peeps released a preview of their Christmas 2013 line and I was so intrigued to see the addition of a Sugar Cookie flavored Peep dipped in Milk Chocolate. I wrote to Just Born asking how to get my hands on some and in a Christmas miracle, the Sugar Cookie Peeps arrived at my door. Amazing- thanks, Just Born! These are really tasty. I gave a number of people the Peeps to test and when asked to describe the flavor, I heard: "extra vanilla"; "a little almond"; "vanilla fruity?"; "gingerbread"; and "cinnamon nutmeg". In other words, not one person could accurately identify it as Sugar Cookie but across the board everyone liked the mysterious and festive flavor. Overall, it emanates a note of "vanilla spice" that is evocative of Winter and the Christmas holiday. I'll certainly eat more of these particular Peeps when I can get my hands on them in stores.

Wish List: Lay's Wavy Potato Chips Dipped in Milk Chocolate

photo courtesy of frito-lay via thedailymail

Astute reader Tara alerted obsessivesweets to the ucpoming arrival of Lay's Wavy Original Potato Chips Dipped in Milk Chocolate, released for the holidays. I think it will be amazing. Apparentaly Pringles is in on this new trend of chocolate covered potato chips. It sounds like a natural winner to me. I can't wait to try.

"Will you love it or hate it? Lay's to launch chocolate-covered potato chips for the holiday season"

Halloween Treats Round-Up: Limited Edition Maynards Sour Patch Kids Heads and Bodies

Post-Halloween Round-Up: Maynards Sour Patch Kids Heads and Bodies. This Halloween mix features orange and cassis flavored South Path Kids. The shapes were a little vague but it's a cute idea and I love the flavors. Cassis is a rare treat that I wish American candies would use more frequently.

Halloween Candy Corn / Pumpkin Spice - Pie Madness, Part 4: Original Starburst Fruit Flavored Candy Corn

Halloween is over, so I'm just logging in a round-up of holiday candy that I didn't get to in time. I was not a fan of these Starburst Candy Corns. The thing that makes Starburst outrageously delicious are its uniquely creamy and tangy fruit flavors. These candy corns in no way replicate those original flavors. Instead, they tasted like flouride. Not a favorite.
