Ülker Chocolate Wafer Bar with Hazelnut Cream

I think of the Ülker Chocolate Wafer bar as the king of the vast variety of wafer bars. The hazelnut cream filling is substantial and warm to offset the light crisp wafer cookies. The chocolate that enrobes the center is thin and delicate but rich and creamy, as well. It really doesn't get much better than that for wafer bars. Some have more bells and whistles (see the array of Kit Kat flavors or even the new Nestle Crunch Girl Scout Cookie Candy Bars), but these simple classic Turkish treats are the best!

Chewy Extinguisher Sour Fruit Candy

These Chewy Extinguisher Sour Fruit Candies are a fun idea and I like candies that are meant to be sorted or consumed as a process/project. They don't taste very good, however, which rather defeats the point. I hate artificial watermelon flavor inherently so cannot judge those tangy candies objectively. The sour strawberries were my favorite- a tart and sweet combination. It's difficult to differentiate the red watermelons from the strawberries so that presented a few unpleasant flavor surprises. Super sour green apple was a little too intense for my taste, and green apple just isn't meant to be a eye-wateringly sour flavor- why not lemon or another naturally sour fruit? The mixed berry extinguishers were soothing and dyed my tongue blue, which is always fun. Overall, these Extinguishers are a solid concept but didn't quite get the flavors right. They should come out with a second run with different fruits and it might be more successful.

Werther's Original Caramel Dreams

Oh, these Werther's Original Caramel Dreams are surprisingly wonderful! A thick shell of rich milk chocolate contains substantive buttery liquid caramel inside. The individually wrapped sweets present the perfect caramel-filled bite. Good for Werther's for branching out! Their hard candies are the ideal flavor, but I've never preferred a hard candy to a chewy or melty little bonbon! Caramel Dreams contain the original flavor but in decadent liquid form blended with chocolate. Lovely!

I've been waiting by the mailbox since ordering the preview batch of limited edition Nestle Crunch Girl Scout Cookie Candy Bars in Coconut and Caramel (Samoas) and Peanut Butter Creme (Tagalongs) flavors. Limited Edition 3 Musketeers Marshmallow Minis

3 Muskateers has produced a new limited edition variety of Mini Muskateer bites: Marshmallow! Previously they came out with Cherry Minis. I loved those quite passionately (read blog review here), and enjoyed these Marshmallow Minis nearly as much. The flavor of the interior is hard to describe- a light vanilla-heavy marshmallow but with a consistency closer to the 3 Muskateers original than to a true marshmallow. They are airy and light and the combination of the marshmallow filling with the milk chocolate exterior is perfection. The bag reads "Whipped Up, Fluffy Chocolate with Marshmallow Taste," but I don't really taste a note of chocolate, whipped or otherwise, in the interior filling. So it doesn't taste like chocolate, and it doesn't feel like marshmallow, but whatever mysterious concoction comprises the filling is successful. What I notice primarily is that once you eat one, you absolutely cannot stop. I sat down on the couch with two other taste-testers, and the entire (large) bag was gone by the time we stood up. There is something compellingly addictive about these between the flavor, light consistency, and perfect one-bite size. My fellow taste-testers gave them rave reviews. I still prefer the Original and even the Cherry varieties, but I wouldn't hesitate to pick up and consume another bag of these Marshmallow Muskateers. Good for 3 Muskateers for branching out. I can't wait to test their next flavor!

Sweets Style: Girl Creates Prom Dress from 18,000 Starburst Wrappers

A recent San Francisco Chronicle article covered a truly dedicated and creative sweets obsessive (read full article here). Diane McNease of Ishpeming, Michigan, spent over five months folding 18,000 Starburst wrappers in order to create the top half of her prom dress. And it's beautiful! She must have eaten an awful lot of Starburst in the process!

It's Really Happening: Nestle Crunch Girl Scout Cookie Candy Bars!

I learned today via the Jezebel blog (click here for full article) that the Nestle Crunch- Girl Scout Cookie candy bars are really happening! Thrilling! Previously, I blogged about the rumor of a Thin Mints candy bar, but now they've added even more flavors to the line-up! Peanut Butter Creme bars as well as Caramel & Coconut bars- both options sound absolutely enticing. I'm going for the caramel/coconut combo first, as that's my favorite cookie. Apparently if you log onto the Nestle Crunch facebook page today at 3pm, you can be among the first people to pre-order these sought-after treats- one box per person allowed! I can't wait!! Any reader who happens to taste-test one of these goodies, please write in with a full report!
PS- [one day later] I went onto Facebook and was able to order two boxes of the upcoming treats! I plan to wait by my mailbox until their arrival!!

Gummy Centipedes, Sharks, Frogs, Cola, and Pandas from IT'SUGAR

Pretty gummies procured at IT'SUGAR in Emeryville, California. Just a lovely array...

Marzipan Delights from Fortunato Brothers Bakery, Brooklyn (Fourth Installment of Marzipan Revelry)

I have previously posted images from my very favorite marzipan purveyor in the world, The Fortunato Brothers Bakery in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. (Perhaps too many. Click here, here, and here for prior postings). The taste is indescribable- the most luxurious, fresh, delectable, perfect marzipan I've ever encountered. The shapes are whimsical pieces of miniature artistry. I can't get enough. And given the low prices, I can taste-test them all! If you're anywhere nearby, do travel to try the Fortunato Bros. Their marzipan is the highlight but the bakery also sells some of the finest and most reasonably priced Italian pastries in all of New York's five boroughs.

e.frutti Mexican-Themed Gummies

These themed e.frutty gummy packs are wildly imaginative in tiny candy forms. The movie theater pack was my favorite, but the Mexican-themed grouping is pretty great, too. I'm not talking about the taste. The taste and consistency of the gummies are uninspiring. But the chili con carne and tortilla are delightful, and the taco, jalapeno, corn, and soda bottles are fun, too. This is hours of gummy entertainment.

IT'SUGAR candy store, Emeryville, California

photo courtesy of pam "momma" mendelsohn

Today I include a photo of myself standing amazed and agog amid giant-size candies at the IT'SUGAR store in Emeryville, California. Yes, those enormous Wonka Sweetarts are real, as are the Nerds and Pop Rocks. Willy Wonka would be pleased at the sight of these giant candies dwarfing the store's inhabitants. It'sugar is a chain store that appears to be rapidly expanding locations throughout the country, so chances are you will find yourself near one at some point- it's worth a visit. There you can find not only the giganto-size version of your favorite candy, but also more esoteric flavors of candy standards as well as hard-to-find nostalgic classics. GooGoo Cluster review and more to come!
