Easter Candy Roundup: Wonka Freckled Eggs Runts

These Wonka Freckled Egg Runts are so pretty, delicately speckled in unique patterns of colored dye exactly like Easter eggs. I'd like to find them in my Easter basket! That said, I just don't enjoy the taste of Runts. I simply taste sour chalk and who likes that? But they've been a staple on the market forever, so someone must enjoy them. And I really enjoy the aesthetics of their Easter edition.

Easter Candy Roundup: Easter Dots

Dots Easter edition are basically the classic Dots, but they're cloudy instead of transparent. Also, they've added a Blueberry Dot that I'm not too fond of. I like the idea of gummy blueberry but I wouldn't have recognized the sweet flavor even as berry-based if the box hadn't informed me. That said, Dots are always delicious and they never really taste like the flavor intended. It's more about the super soft and satisfying consistency of the candy. And these are a really pretty new variety. Not bad! Not so good, but not bad. And I cheer on Dots for continuing to experiment with the classic blend!

Kinder Eggs Banned in U.S.!

Apparently it's old news that I missed that Kinder Eggs have been banned in the United States because of their terrible danger to young children (read the CNN report here). I might have noticed the ban if the wonderful hollow milk and white chocolate eggs that come with a little toy packed inside had disappeared from my neighborhood stores, but it seems that the stores in my neighborhood didn't get the memo, either, because I see the things everywhere. Apparently with the Easter Season upon us. Honestly, I understand that a small child should not be tempted to shove a large chocolate egg with a plastic toy inside into his or her mouth, but really, aren't there far more insidious dangers out there on the market? And do all Americans have to relinquish their addiction to the Kinderjoy because some parent somewhere didn't monitor their child's careless consumption of the classic treat? I'm aghast. Bring back the Kinder delights! In the meantime, I'm buying up every Kinder Egg I can find! And for other New Yorkers who need to stock up, check out this list compiled by DNAinfo of local stores that still carry the toy-filled sweets).

Adventures in Science: Cadbury Creme Eggs in the Laboratory

In honor of Easter, scientists at the University of Nottingham conducted and filmed a number of in-depth chemistry experiments upon the indominable Cadbury Creme Egg. The Atlantic published the footage which proves that creme eggs are, indeed, a wonder of science! Enjoy!

Easter Candy Roundup: Wonka Everlasting Gobstopper Eggbreakers

Honestly, the Easter version of Everlasting Gobstoppers just takes the traditional round shape and makes it oval to look like an Easter egg. Still a tasty treat, though! Especially at the movies!

This Year's Winner of The Washington Post "Peeps Show" Contest

The Washington Post hosts a yearly "Peeps Show" contest calling for the creation of extraordinary dioramas in celebration of marshmallow Peeps. Thanks to reader, Pam "Momma" Mendelsohn, for alerting me about this year's winner, a striking diorama entitled, "Chilean CoPeepapo Mine Rescue," a riviting reenactment of the Chilean minors' emergence from entrapment portrayed in vivid marshmallow splendor. Check it out!

Easter Candy Roundup: Wonka Hoppin' Nerds

A bright array of spring colors for Hoppin' Nerds. Nothing so new taste-wise, but I think they make a splendidly cheerful sight and they've got that great effervescent Nerds flavor. On a personal level, I believe that Nerds taste especially delicious when consumed at the movies, so this honestly makes the color scheme a moot point.

Easter Candy Roundup: Whoppers Eggs

Let the Easter Candy Parade continue! Easter is such a great candy holiday. These Whoppers Eggs only vary from the classic Whoppers in their slightly, larger oval, rather than round, shape. I guess it's pretty nice to get a little more malted in the malted milk ball to chocolate ratio, but the difference is negligible. Cute, though.

Papabubble Candy Shop, NYC: Sneak Preview

This week I stopped by the papabubble candy shop, where you can watch them concocting incredible tasty and colorful creations. I've never really understood the ruckus over hard candy and papabubble changed my mind. I picked up a big bag of candy and will photograph and report back soon, but early tests show that this is really wonderful stuff.

Easter Candy Roundup: Vosges Chocolate Easter Bunnies

For Easter, Vosges Haut-Chocolat has come out with a delightfully unique array of chocolate bunnies. Ok, they're a little steep at $12 a bunny (they're not that large), and so I simply pass them daily on my way to and from work, dreaming of how exciting they must taste (I love Vosges chocolate). If I were to pay $12 for a chocolate bunny, this is what I would pick. The flavors are:

Barcelona Bunny- Hickory smoked almonds + grey sea salt + 45% deep milk chocolate
Toffee Bunny- Sweet butter toffee + pink Himalayan salt + deep milk chocolate
Red Fire Easter Bunny- Dark chocolate bunny with Mexican chillies + Ceylon cinnamon
Orchid Vanilla Bunny- Tahitian vanilla bean + 62% dark chocolate
