Backlog: Strawberry Milkshake Whoppers

I usually take a fairly hostile position toward any candy flavored with strawberry (see here and here)- it's just a personal preference. These Strawberry Milkshake Whoppers, however, are delectable! The strawberry flavoring is really mellow and creamy and melts beautifully alongside the malted center. Ok, they're not going to replace the chocolate variety in the pantheon of classics, but I'd totally pick these up as a movie snack once in awhile. And they're lovely in pink!

Backlog: Bassett's Pear Drops

Pear constitutes an underrated candy flavor and so I appreciate the unique musky taste of these Bassett's Pear Drops. Although the hard candies come in both yellow and red, I couldn't discern a difference between the two. These aren't intended to be consumed all in one sitting; better to pop a few if you need a little sweet after dinner or a light treat at the movies.

Backlog: Wonka Tropical Fun Dip

I've gotten so awfully behind on candy reviews recently. Honestly, in this summer of heatwaves and moving house and all kinds of tsurris, I've certainly eaten my fill of candy but have failed to actually follow through with many write-ups. So bad. So in the interest of getting some backlog out of the way, I'm posting some super short thoughts on some recently taste-tested items. I'll return to my usual long-form reviews once I've caught up a little.

I love the classic Fun Dip and was excited for some new flavors but these three new tropical varieties were a disappointment. Ok, I just hate artificial watermelon flavor so maybe it was good if you like that sort of thing. I couldn't be objective. The mango tasted like 98% chemicals and 2% mango flavor, blech. And the strawberry was pretty tasty but one in three just isn't good enough. Keep trying, Fun Dip!

Wishlist: Kraft Jet-Puffed Caramel & Vanilla SwirlMallows

While we're on the topic of marshmallows, take note of these new creations from Kraft, Jet-Puffed SwirlMallows in Caramel & Vanilla flavor! It could be a disastrous blend, but might also constitute a stroke of evil genius. I'm adding these to the ever-growing wish list and keeping my eyes peeled!

Stay Puft Marshmallows Brought To Life: With Caffeine!

This is so exciting! And ok, it probably is more film-related than sugar-related, but either way it's worth a mention. At long last, inspired by the classic Ghostbusters, there are now Stay Puft (caffeinated!) Marshmallows on the market! I wonder if they grow to amazing proportions if thrown into hot cocoa...

Thanks to my astute mother for discovering and documenting these incredible artist-inspired cakes served in the cafe of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The museum's resident baker, Caitlin Williams Freeman, invents an ever-revolving and evolving series of gorgeous cakes, ice creams and pastries in homage to the works on view. Personally, as an art historian and a cake devotee (understatement), this seems like the most brilliant of all possible combinations. I can't wait to see what Freeman comes up with next and hope to make it to the West Coast to taste-test her newest creations soon!

How can I be sitting calmly at work when there's a new 3000 square foot space opening today, and merely blocks away, dedicated to the glories of Pop-Tarts? With Pop-Tart sushi and a whole spectrum of Pop-Tart-based treats on the menu, I'm running to Times Square as soon as humanly possible. Today's Huffington Post covers the exciting developments going on at today's opening.
