Detritus: Early Candy Wrapper from Trumps Caramels

courtesy of The Lower East Side Tenement Museum

How can I resist? The collections of The Lower East Side Tenement Museum (definitely worth a visit in NYC!) house an early local candy wrapper discovered in the ongoing excavation of the museum's backyard/privy. Wonderful packaging for these early Trumps Caramels. Just wish I could taste-test, a bit stale or no...

Is Your Chocolate Consumption Causing Depression?

Do people rely on the comforts of chocolate because they're already depressed or is the chocolate, itself, the catalyst? Read further as Gawker addresses this worrisome conundrum.

New Moon Sky Bar

I've become a little hostile to the saturation of Twilight products on the market. However, three cheers for Sky Bar for optioning those New Moon movie tie-in rights! It's a classic candy bar that I believe the younger generation isn't too familiar with. Maybe this marketing ploy will garner a new audience and expand and extend the popularity of this excellent classic- since 1937! How can anyone resist the pull of three candy bars varieties in one? Unlike the traditional Sky Bar, in which there are four pods of creamy fillings- peanut butter, chocolate, vanilla, and caramel, this New Moon version only contains three but in a larger size. I happened to get peanut butter, vanilla, and caramel (the three I prefer, hoorah!), but am unsure whether chocolate cream has been left out of the New Moon edition altogether or whether you get a little element of surprise discovering which three of the four flavors are contained in each candy bar.

e.frutti Movie Bag Gummi Candy

Alright, the e.frutti gummy candy doesn't taste all that good. The flavors are really inconsistent and weak and the consistency is a little too tough. But honestly I don't care because these Movie Theater themed shapes are little pieces of art. It's all about the process of eating them rather than the flavor and I had an excellent time working my way through miniature concession stand delights.

Score (flavor): 2
Score (beauty): 5

Wish List: Ben & Jerry's Bonnaroo Buzz

Though I rarely venture into ice cream terrain, the new Bonnaroo Buzz flavor from Ben & Jerry's is too exciting to ignore. It must be tracked down, and stat. Go Ben and Go Jerry for continuing to develop the most compelling and thrilling ice cream flavors! Coffee and malt ice cream with whiskey caramel swirls and english toffee pieces sounds like a mixture beyond sublime. Want and need. Thanks for the heads up, Adam!

German McDonald's Match Neighborhood Flavor Profiles to Cupcakes. Eh.

There's almost no sweet I love as much as a well-crafted cupcake. A miniature cake all my own with the "correct" ratio of tons of frosting to very little actual cake. But with the saturation of cupcake specialists across New York City complete, even I'm a little over all this hoopla. A few cupcake specialists would suffice. Do we really want to become The Cupcake City? To underscore my belief, German McDonald's have marketed a line of cupcake treats that associate Manhattan with the baked good. There are four cupcake flavors, each (inadequately) "matched" to the personality of a different NYC neighborhood. Check out the descriptions through grubstreet or burgerbusiness, and even if you don't read German take a gander at the homepage displaying renderings of people meant to symbolize each neighborhood's flavor. A guy from Chelsea in baggy jeans and a button down plaid shirt? Really!? Chocolate is the essence of Chelsea? Central Park is Strawberry? Coffee for the Lower East Side? I will agree that Soho is Vanilla these days...

Buy a Junior's Cheesecake Styled By Isaac Mizrahi

I'm a big fan of Junior's Cheesecake. I'm pretty fond of Isaac Mizrahi, too, as well as his affection for everything plaid. In what alternate universe was this project was conceived? Selling plaid cheesecakes on QVC? The idea of allowing my belly to outgrow my current jeans in the name of fashion is exciting. Junior's ships their cheesecakes fresh worldwide so freshness shouldn't be a problem. I simply don't equate QVC with baked goods, but perhaps it will take Mizrahi's madras stylings to get me on board. Seriouseats explores the plaid confections on a deeper level. And if you'd like to purchase one of these hefty treats for $44, head straight to the source.
